Instructions:

  • Secure the vehicle on a flat surface with parking brake applied.
  • It is important to make sure that the problem is actually with the pump before commencing the replacement work. For this, take the fuel cap off and told your assistant to move the ignition key to the ON position. Observe the humming sound of the fuel pump at filler opening. If you don’t hear any noise, changing the fuel pump may be desirable.
  • Find the fuel pump fuse and relay and inspect them for any damage.
  • A blown fuse can also be a problem, replace the fuse and check if pump works or not. If it does, no need to replace the pump. Otherwise move onto the next steps.
  • Apart from fuse and relay, also make sure that the pump is getting appropriate power and properly grounded.
  • Ease the pressure in fuel system and discard the negative battery cable from the terminal.
  • Drain the fuel from the fuel tank.
  • Discard the filler tube hose and the electrical connectors to the pump.
  • Place a jack and a wooden block under the fuel tank and secure the tank on them.
  • Unfasten the bolts or screws holding the tank to the frame.
  • Draw the tank down and discard any fuel lines to the pump. Take the pump out of the tank.
  • Fit a new fuel pump into the tank.
  • Reconnect the fuel lines to the pump. Raise the tank with jack and secure the tank with straps or bolts.
  • Reinstall the filler tube hose and the electrical connectors to the fuel pump.
  • Reattach the negative battery cable to the terminal.
  • Add gas to the tank and verify the replacement work by taking a small drive.
