Instructions:
- Disconnect the fuel pump by removing the fuse and ease the pressure in the fuel system.
- Discard the fuel line and fix a fuel pressure gauge. Put the fuse back to the fuel pump.
- Turn the vehicle on and carefully observe the area surrounding the gauge connection for leak.
- Remove the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator. Fix a hand held vacuum pump in place of vacuum hose.
- Record the reading on the fuel pressure gauge before and after the vacuum is applied. With the increase in vacuum, the fuel pressure decreases while an increase in fuel pressure is seen with decreased vacuum. Match the recorded readings with the readings mentioned in the vehicle specifications.
- Put the vacuum hose back to the fuel pressure regulator and record the fuel pressure. Match this reading with the vehicle’s specifications. Discard the vacuum hose again and observe the gauge. As soon as you dismiss the vacuum hose, the pressure will jump up.
- In case the low pressure is recorded, squeeze the fuel return line and observe the gauge reading. The fuel pump is faulty if there is no change in pressure. However, if the pressure rises, disconnect the fuel pressure regulator.
- In case the pressure is too high, switch the engine off and discard the fuel return line and examine if it is blocked or clogged. If the line is clear, you need to change the fuel pressure regulator.
- Next, fix a vacuum gauge to the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose and switch the engine on. Inspect the presence of vacuum. Examine the vacuum port or hose for clogging, in case no vacuum is observed. However, if it shows a reasonable amount of vacuum, regulator is defective.
- Evacuate the pressure from the fuel system before planning to replace the fuel pressure regulator.
- Discard the negative battery cable from the terminal.
- Wipe the surrounding surface of the fuel pressure regulator off.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator.
- Unfasten the bolts holding the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel rail and take the regulator out.
- Introduce new O-rings onto the fuel pressure regulator and oil them.
- Secure the new fuel pressure regulator to the fuel rail with bolts.
- Once the installation is completed, check the pressure with vacuum gauge. Same readings on the gauge and vehicle’s specifications verify the installation.
